Rhinoplasty Swelling and Recovery Timeline

Recovery after rhinoplasty happens in stages. This timeline is a general guide; your own instructions and check-up dates come from your surgeon.

At a glance

Most bruising fades within two weeks and the splint is usually removed after about a week. Swelling of the bridge reduces markedly in the first three months, while the tip can take 6–12 months or longer with thick skin. The final result is usually assessed at the end of the first year.

First 48 hours

Swelling and bruising peak in the first two days. A splint is on the nose, sometimes with internal splints or packing.

  • Rest with your head elevated on two pillows.
  • Use cold compresses around the eyes as advised.
  • Do not blow your nose; sneeze with your mouth open.
  • Take medication regularly and avoid sudden strain.

Week 1: splint and first check-up

Swelling and bruising start to decrease from day two or three. The splint is usually removed around day seven; in open rhinoplasty the columellar stitches come out at the same visit. The nose may look upturned and full at first — this is swelling.

Weeks 2–4: back to social life

Most bruising is gone within two weeks and remaining yellowish marks can be covered with make-up. Many desk workers return to work. Light walking is fine; glasses are used according to your surgeon’s advice.

Months 1–3: the bridge becomes defined

Swelling of the bridge decreases and the profile becomes clearer. Exercise resumes gradually with your surgeon’s approval; contact sports later. Morning swelling is normal.

Months 3–12: tip refinement

The tip heals last. Its swelling decreases slowly and definition improves, faster with thin skin and slower with thick skin.

One year and beyond

The final shape is usually assessed after a year, sometimes longer with thick skin or revision. Any correction is decided after healing is complete.
