Otoplasty reshapes the ear cartilage and sets the ears closer to the head through an incision hidden behind the ear. It is usually done after age 5–6, when ear growth is largely complete, and is also performed in adults.
Why are ears prominent?
Usually congenital: an underdeveloped antihelical fold or a deep concha. It is not a health problem but can affect children socially.
Surgery
Through an incision behind the ear, the missing fold is created with sutures, the concha reduced if needed and the ear set back. Children usually have general anaesthesia; adults may have local anaesthesia with sedation.
Recovery and headband
A dressing for a few days, then a headband, especially at night, for some weeks. School or work after about a week; avoid contact sports for longer.
Risks
Asymmetry, recurrence, palpable stitches, scarring, infection and rarely haematoma.
