Follicles are usually harvested one by one with FUE from the back of the scalp and implanted in thinning areas. Transplanted hairs shed in the first weeks, regrow from about month 3–4 and the result is usually clear by 12 months. The donor area is limited, so planning and medical therapy matter.
Who is a candidate?
Male-pattern hair loss, receding hairline, thin brows or beard and scar alopecia. Donor adequacy is the key factor; rapidly progressing loss or some scalp disorders need medical treatment first.
Techniques
- FUE: individual follicle extraction.
- DHI: direct implantation with special pens.
- FUT: a strip of scalp from the back of the head.
Process and results
Local anaesthesia; crusting in the first days; shedding at 2–4 weeks; regrowth from month 3–4; result at about 12 months.
Medical therapy and expectations
Transplantation does not stop loss in untreated areas; medical treatment prescribed by a doctor may complement it. Density expectations over large areas should be realistic.
Risks
Infection, cysts, donor thinning or scarring, numbness, unnatural hairline and lower-than-expected growth.
Frequently asked questions
When will transplanted hair grow?
From about month 3–4, with the result clear by about 12 months.
Is it permanent?
Donor follicles are usually resistant to loss, but loss elsewhere can continue.
Can women have a transplant?
In suitable patterns, after investigating the cause.
