Reconstruction can use tissue expanders and implants, your own tissue (flaps from the abdomen, back or elsewhere) or a combination. It can be immediate, at the time of mastectomy, or delayed until treatment is complete; the decision is made with the oncology team.
Timing
Immediate reconstruction can avoid a period without a breast; radiotherapy, stage and health may favour delay. Timing is planned with the surgical and oncology team.
Methods
- Implant-based: often an expander first, then a permanent implant.
- Own tissue: abdominal or back tissue for a natural feel.
- Combined and fat grafting: to refine shape.
- Nipple reconstruction: usually last, with tissue or tattoo.
Symmetry
The other breast may need reduction, lift or augmentation; reconstruction is often staged.
Recovery and risks
Own-tissue reconstruction needs a longer stay and recovery. Infection, implant problems, tissue loss, donor-site weakness and further surgery are possible.
Frequently asked questions
Does reconstruction affect cancer follow-up?
It is planned not to interfere; follow-up continues with the oncology team.
Can reconstruction be done at mastectomy?
In suitable patients, yes.
Own tissue or implant?
Both have advantages and limits; the choice depends on your body and treatment.
