Masseter reduction softens a wide, square lower face caused by a thick chewing muscle. The usual method is botulinum toxin injected into the muscle; the effect becomes visible in a few weeks and lasts several months. If the width comes from bone or fat, contouring or fat reduction is considered instead.
Causes of a square jaw
Muscle, bone at the jaw angle and fat all contribute. Muscle thickness is assessed while you clench; teeth grinding can contribute.
Treatment
Botulinum toxin is injected at both jaw angles in a few minutes without anaesthesia. Results appear in 4–8 weeks and are repeated as needed.
Side effects
Bruising, temporary chewing fatigue and rarely smile asymmetry. Not used in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
