Breast augmentation is usually performed with silicone gel implants placed in front of, behind or partly behind the muscle, through an incision typically in the breast crease. Size and shape are chosen according to chest measurements and tissue thickness. Implants are not lifetime devices and need regular follow-up.
Choosing an implant
The right implant depends on chest width, breast base, skin elasticity and tissue thickness, not only on cup size. Round and anatomical implants in different profiles are available.
Placement and incision
- Subglandular: with adequate tissue coverage.
- Submuscular or dual-plane: for thin tissue, to cover the upper edge.
- Incision: usually the breast crease; sometimes around the areola or in the armpit.
Fat transfer
Your own fat can give a smaller, natural increase; part is absorbed and several sessions may be needed. Breast imaging follow-up is important.
Recovery
Tightness, pain and swelling in the first days, more with submuscular placement. Support bra advised; desk work after about a week; heavy lifting and chest exercise later.
Risks and long-term care
Capsular contracture, rupture or displacement, asymmetry, sensory change, infection and bleeding. A rare lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) has been associated with textured implants. Regular check-ups and possible replacement are part of long-term care.
